Bright cheerful classrooms await the students of the Juhu Gandhigram Mumbai Public School (MPS)

Bright cheerful classrooms await the students of the Juhu Gandhigram Mumbai Public School (MPS)as they return from their Diwali holidays. This is yet another example of the wonderful synergy between Nagriksatta the NGO, BMC and Rastaa Chaap.  Nagriksatta Ward 63 Association started and is running the pre primary and supporting the primary and secondary school since 2008. From an initial strength of 180 the school now boasts of 1000+ students. Every issue is addressed and resolved and solutions sought making the students the winners. Quality teaching, extra curricular activities including computer education are at par if not better than the local schools. This is evident from the increased numbers, good attendance and minimal dropout rate of our confident students. Space constraint and dirth of classrooms are vital issues the school has been grappling with. To circumvent this, the hall and stage have been converted to pre primary classrooms. Mr Ameet Satam willingly provided the partitions.

"The ladies of  Rastachaap- Haryali painted the walls to provide the much needed lively environment. These walls  surely match big smiles on our students faces" . ..sherley singh

Bugle call for our Juhu neighbours

💚🌿🍃Bugle call for our Juhu neighbours - If you happen to spot our fledgling tree wrapped in green canvas close to where you live, we invite you to adopt the tree. It needs your care - just water it daily and ensure it's blooming.
Nature has done its bit, now is our challenge to bid adieu to the RainGods and do ours.
Looking for your green support 💚🌿🍃

Humans Of Bombay Post

“A few of my friends and I started a project called Rastaa Chaap. We basically paint dead trees to make them beautiful works of art, but more importantly to create awareness about how many trees are dying around us. We’re not expecting the authorities to do things, we are not complaining, we’re just going out there and trying to make a difference.
We help people plant, protect and preserve treesand it’s a small step, but it’s a step none the less. Ever since we started, the support has been pouring in, in terms of volunteers or finances but one particular incident touched my heart.
A young teenage girl came to me and said that instead of taking her friends out, she wanted to pay for all of her friends to plant trees. So on her birthday about 20 teenagers spent the day planting trees between 7th and 8th road in Juhu. What’s amazing is that they haven’t forgotten about their trees after that— on their way to school they would stop by and water them…this was when it was summer and the heat was unbearable -- it was heartwarming to see that they cared.
I’m just glad that I’m doing my bit to make this city greener and I hope that this little step can go a long way.”

Mumbai, Wondering Who Painted Your Trees So Beautifully? Find Out Here
Colourful painted trees on streets of Mumabi

HIGHLIGHTS

  1. A group of volunteers in Mumbai paint dead trees.
  2. The group has painted trees in Juhu, Versova, Bandra and Khar.
  3. The group called Rastaa Chaap was featured by Humans of Bombay.
On July 5, popular Facebook page Humans of Bombaywrote about the good people of Rastaa Chaap, who have been quietly painting trees on the streets of Mumbai.

Not only do Raasta Chaap plant and preserve trees, they also transform them into works of art and the Facebook post explains how they hit upon this idea. It all started when a Mumbai teenager wanted to celebrate her birthday by paying for her friends to plant trees. With Raasat Chaap's help, a group of 20 planted trees in Juhu.

"We basically paint dead trees to make them beautiful works of art, but more importantly to create awareness about how many trees are dying around us. We're not expecting the authorities to do things, we are not complaining, we're just going out there and trying to make a difference," Sherley Singh of Raasta Chaap says in the Facebook post.

The group have painted trees in Juhu, Versova, Bandra and Khar. Here's what their beautiful artwork looks like:

Tree Plantation - VM road Juhu Mumbai

33 trees on VM road

And as we get ready to plant 33 trees on VM road (the wide road that connects Juhu beach road to Mithibai College Junction) we are overjoyed at the enthusiasm of the BMC staff, the workers and the volunteers who brave the sharp, strong sun to work together as a team to do a noble service to the city.

We are dismayed by a few naysayers who question the work that is being done....those who want parking spots and not trees....those who threaten to uproot a tree because they don't want to be bothered by its existence...those who ignore the warnings of climate change by pretending that trees make no difference to our world.

We need many more people who care for nature and so many more who stand up for it...we really need green warriors in this day and age, those who will fight and explain and cajole and do whatever it takes to make our city greener.
Be a warrior and protect the area that you live in.

Plant one tree and care for it.
Stand up for the rights of trees.
Go out there and get your hands dirty to purify your soul...
